Quit all non-essential apps

Make sure that you close all non-essential apps on your laptop. If you don’t need it to teach/learn you should quit it. 


Close all non-essential tabs

Close all non-essential tabs in Chrome. Open tabs in Chrome eat up memory on your computer. Again if you don’t need it to teach you should close it. If you have too many tabs open and don’t want to lose any, use an extension called Session Buddy to save your current list of tabs before you close them.


Remove non-essential extensions

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.

  2. At the top right, click More and then More tools and then Extensions.

  3. On to the extension you want to remove, click Remove.

  4. Confirm by clicking Remove.

Update your OS

Make sure your laptop is updated to MacOS Catalina. Follow these instructions for updating your MacBook.


Disable Hardware Acceleration in Chrome

Follow these steps to turn off hardware acceleration. 


Reduce your video quality

Turn down the quality of your Meet video to 360p instead of 720p. A higher video resolution requires more bandwidth.

  1. Join a Google Meet meeting like you normally would and click on more with the ‘3-dot’ icon.
  2. Select ‘Settings’ from the sub-menu and head over to ‘Video’ to access settings for your video feed.
  3. Under the ‘Send resolution’ option select ‘Standard definition (360p)’.
  4. Now head over to ‘Receive resolution’ and select ‘Standard definition (360p)’.


 Check your internet connection

Run a speed test on your internet by searching for speed test on Google and then pressing Run Speed Test. This will give you your download and upload speeds. Compare these to your current internet bill and make sure you are getting what your provider promises. If you are not getting the speed you are promised contact them and let them know.
