What is Google Chat?
Google chat is a direct messaging service provided by Google. It allows for one-on-one communication and group messaging. We will be using it as an alternative form of communication between faculty, staff, coaches, and students.
How do I access Google Chat?
You can access Google Chat in the following ways:
- Go to chat.google.com
- In Gmail on a computer, Chat appears in the left panel.
- On mobile (phone or iPad), use the Chat or Gmail app for iOS or Android
How do I use Google Chat?
Instructions will be slightly different depending on how you access Google Chat.
Send a message to a person:
- Start a chat by either clicking + or New Chat.
- Start typing a name or email address. Suggestions appear as you enter text.
- Select the person you want to message
- Enter a message.
- Click Send.
Send a message to a group:
Group conversations: Chat directly with a group. For example, use group conversations to have a quick discussion after a meeting.
- Start a group message by clicking + then, Start group conversation or clicking New Chat.
- Add the people you want to message.
- Enter a message
- Click Send.
Create a room:
Rooms: A central place where people can share files, assign tasks, and stay connected.
- Click + then, Create a room or clicking New Chat > Create a Room.
- Enter a room name (something like "Science Department" or "Varsity Tennis")
- Enter names or email addresses of people and groups you want to add. You can also select from suggestions.
- Click Create.
Other Info
- External communication is off for students. This means that students can't use Google Chat to chat with people outside of IH.
- Easy to start an instant Google Meet if needed. Students still can't start the video call but a faculty/staff member can start the video call.
- Chat history is saved in our Google Vault indefinitely
