Below are explanations for some of the frequently asked questions that we receive:

What do all the different terms mean (assigned, due, publish, etc.)?

Attempts Allowed:

This is the number of attempts a student can have at taking the assessment. If you allow 2 attempts, students will complete the assessment once, see their results (if you allow them to see their results) and have the opportunity to take the assessment again. If the student opts to take the second attempt at the assessment, the teacher will not see the results of the first attempt and can't even tell if a student took the second attempt or not. You might use this option if your assessment is formative in purpose and students are using the assessment as a form of practice and not for a grade or demonstration of knowledge.

Allow Students to resume independently:

This allows the student to leave the assessment screen and come back to finish at a later time without the teacher needing to reset the assessment for the student or enable the retake button. You might use this if students are taking assessments at home and have spotty wifi because it allows them to continue the assessment if they lose internet connection. However, if the assessment is timed, it pauses the time and resumes the time when they come back in. So this is not a setting a teacher should use if they truly want an assessment to have a time limit.

Assigned Date (and Time):

This is when the assessment will be "open" and available for students to take. Students can't start the assessment before this date and time. If you know you want your students to be able to start the assessment at 9:15am, you would set the assigned time for 9:15am. If no time is entered, the time defaults to 8:30am.

Due Date (and Time):

This is the day and time when the students will no longer have access to take the assessment. If no time is entered, the time defaults to 11:59pm.

Publish:

This is when the assessment will show up in students' Assignment Center.

  • Now - Students will see the quiz in their Assignment Center. This does not mean that students can open the quiz. Use "Assigned Date (and Time)" for when you want them to be able to start the assessment.
  • No - Student will not see the quiz in their Assignment Center.
  • Assigned Date - Students will not see the quiz in their Assignment Center until the Assigned Date and time have passed.

I want to give a pop-quiz to my students (I don't want them to know it's coming). How do I do that?

Set the Assigned Date and time to when they will be taking the quiz in class. Set Publish to Assigned Date. Students won't see the assessment in their Assignment Center until it's time to take the quiz. If you're not sure of the exact time, set Publish to No. When you're ready for students to take the assessment, open onCampus and change Publish to Now

A student was absent when I gave an assessment and now they don't see the option to take it. How do I open the assessment for them to take?

Click on the name of the assessment to see students' results. Click the Results button next to the student's name. Click the Extend button and then fill in how many days you need to extend the assessment for the student from the original Due Date. (Example: If the class took the quiz on Monday and it is now Wednesday, you would type 2 since it is 2 days later.)

How do I give a timed onCampus Assessment to a student with extended time?

  1. When creating your assessment, look for the Time to Complete section of the Add Assessment window.
  2. Enter the amount of time you want the rest of the class to complete the assessment in and click Adjust individual student times.
  3. Find the extended time student and adjust their time for the assessment as needed.
  4. Click Apply and continue creating the assessment.
